Stay Safe in the Sun Policy

Skoolz Out After School Service recognises how damaging strong sun can be on children’s vulnerable skin and how easily children can get burned playing out in the sunshine. We realise the importance of ‘sun protection’. We have a responsibility to ensure that children in our care are protected from the sun. We achieve this by:

  • Ensuring children are wearing suitable clothing. If a child is wearing a top that do not cover their shoulders, we will advise parent/carer or risk of sunburn.
  • Children are not permitted to remove their t-shirts
  • Ensuring children wear sensible footwear such as trainers or canvas shoes with socks to prevent rubbing and to enable children to run, play and climb safely.
  • Asking parent/carers to provide a sun hat with child’s name on label.
  • Asking parent/carers to apply sun cream prior to attending each session.
  • If a child has sensitive skin, we will ask the parent/carer to provide sun cream with child’s name on it and a completed consent form allowing staff to administer the sun cream.
  • Ensuring staff have sun cream for their group on trips and outings
  • Ensuring all parent/carers complete a consent form for staff to administer sun cream.
  • Ensuring sun cream is applied before and during outdoor play as required.
  • Ensuring staff wear a sun safe wristband when outdoors with children
  • Sun safe wristband
  • Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 50 (UVB Protection)
  • High star rating with at least 4 stars (UVA Protection)

If a child arrives at the setting without suitable clothing or footwear the parent will be asked to collect items required and deliver to the service or if this is not possible, take their child home.
